In this episode, I talk with Brian Bishop, a coach from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) who has had a huge impact on college swimming. Brian spent 29 years leading the TCNJ men’s swimming and diving team, where he helped build a strong program with many successes in competition, academics, and leadership.

Key Lessons

1. Leadership comes from long-term effort. Brian’s coaching career shows that staying committed over many years matters more than quick results. Over nearly three decades, he helped his team win 18 Metropolitan Conference titles, eight NJAC team titles, and 23 top-20 NCAA finishes. That consistency did not happen by accident — it came from daily work, faith in his coaching philosophy, and trust in his swimmers.

2. Success includes both sport and school. Brian did not only focus on fast times and trophies. The Lions also earned 10 CSCAA All-Academic Team honors, and 21 athletes were recognized individually for academic excellence. This shows that doing well in the classroom is part of what made his teams successful.

3. Impact is measured by people, not just wins. Under Brian’s leadership, 72 student-athletes earned a total of 271 All-America awards, and he coached multiple national champions, both individual and relay teams. He also helped an athlete reach the Olympic Games, showing that a coach’s influence can extend far beyond college.

Final Thoughts

Brian’s story is inspiring because it shows that being a great coach is about more than winning meets. It’s about building a culture where people grow, work hard, and become better versions of themselves. He stayed with one program for many years and made a real difference in the lives of the athletes he coached. Whether you are swimming, studying, or leading others, his episode reminds us that patience, dedication, and care for people will always matter.
